The original PlayStation was released in 1994 followed up by PlayStation 2 which was released in 2000. The current PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, and the PlayStation 4 release date would be in 2012 if the six years console release continued on.
Factors which could delay th release date of the PS4 could include the lack of success the PlayStation 3 had initially. Since the PS3’s launch in November of 2006, each console been sold at a loss until April 2010. Its common for consoles to sell at a loss to gain market share as manufacturers make up the loss from game prices and additional add ons like controllers, while waiting for the component pricing to drop as manufacturing costs decrease, but the costs were higher than expected. In comparison, the Xbox 360, which sold at a loss of around $100 per unit when it launched, quickly began to see a profit of $75 per console within a year and a half of the its release.
The other factor is the general lengthening of the console cycles as the investment costs into each release are getting bigger and require more time to create profitability. However now that Microsoft is in the market with the XBox there is a big incentive to get to market first with the next generation consoles to gain market share and mind share in the market for potential buyers.
